Abstract

Religious authorities have emphasized in multiple statements the importance of participation in elections, acknowledging that while this practice may not be flawless, it remains the safest and most secure option to guide the country towards safety and a better future. They warn against political isolation and chaos, advocating for a roadmap of reform and correction through the gateway of elections. This call aims to encourage many to participate, ensuring the scrutiny and examination of their representatives' choices to ensure correctness. The Shiite doctrine, characterized by the unique attention it grants to its scholars, who are considered representatives of the Imam, reserves certain functions exclusively for religious jurisprudence, such as issuing religious edicts, clarifying legal rulings, mediating disputes, and adjudication. Among the aspects the comprehensive jurisprudent attends to are political events and societal issues, deriving religious rulings relevant to politics according to place, time, and circumstances. The Iraqi religious authority has maintained a policy of non-interference in direct political activities, leaving the field open for politicians trusted by the Iraqi people. The authority confines itself to advising and guiding. Nevertheless, during each election cycle, it faces irresponsible criticisms, attributed to it roles beyond its core functions, such as selecting and endorsing the most suitable candidates. It also exposes corrupt individuals by naming them.
