Abstract

The research dealt with the Battle of Siffin between the army of the Caliphate led by Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and the army of the Levant led by Muawiyah bin Abi Safeen, and the reasons that prompted the two sides to fight this battle, and the research showed the position of each of them towards the other in this war, which showed the superiority of the army of the Caliphate, which was about to end the battle in his favour. Had it not been for Muawiyah resorting to the trick of raising the Qur’an, which led to the division of the caliphate army against itself into three sections, he demanded two of them to accept the cessation of war and resort to arbitration, which is the demand of Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan, but the Kharijites, who defected from the army of the caliphate, demanded God’s rule. It is not the arbitration of men, which is the demand of the Levantine army, and Al-Ash’ath bin Qais, one of the leaders of the Iraqi army, who worked to force the Imam to accept arbitration, which increased the deterioration of the situation within the Caliphate’s army, and the Imam tried hard to dissuade the Kharijites and Al-Ash’ath from this doctrine of theirs, but he was not able, on the contrary From that, they forced the Imam to accept the arbitration, and the matter did not stop at accepting the arbitration only, but they forced him to accept Abu Musa al-Ash’ari as a representative of the Iraqi army in the supposed arbitration, and the army of the Levant was represented in the arbitration by Amr ibn al-Aas, and it is noticeable that the arbitration was discussed for a period of time He famously discussed the issue of choosing a caliph for the Muslims in Idhrah, and he did not discuss the reasons that led to the outbreak of war between the two warring armies, whether Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan’s demand from Imam Ali bin Abi Talib to hand over the killers of the caliph Uthman bin Affan, or the demand of Imam Ali bin Abi Talib, may God bless him and grant him peace, to dismiss him. Muawiyah from the state of the Levant.
