This study aims to highlight the impact of the classification of Meccan and Medinan revelations in interpreting the Quran and understanding its educational implications, considering it one of the most important Quranic sciences that assists in analyzing the text and uncovering its purposes according to the differences between the Makki and Madani phases. The research emphasizes the significance of distinguishing between the Quranic discourse in Mecca, which focused on building the individual and consolidating faith, and the discourse in Medina, which was directed toward building society and regulating social and legislative relations. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical methodology by examining the texts established by scholars in defining Makki and Madani, clarifying the benefits of this science, linking it to naskh (abrogation) and the explanation of concise verses, and tracing the development of religious and educational discourse throughout the two phases of the prophetic mission. It also explores educational applications from Meccan and Medinan surahs that demonstrate the differences in educational functions, such as the reinforcement of monotheism in the Meccan phase (e.g., al-Araf 172; al-Fajr 27–30), and the establishment of social order in the Medinan phase (e.g., al-Nisaa 58; al-Maaedah 2).
The study concludes that understanding Meccan and Medinan is not merely a historical classification, but rather a fundamental key to uncovering the Quran’s educational purposes. Quranic discourse progresses pedagogically from shaping the individual internally to structuring society externally. For instance, Makki surahs emphasized purification of the soul and patience in the face of challenges, while Madani surahs introduced detailed legislation such as inheritance laws (al-Nisaa 11) and the punishment for theft (al-Maaedah 38), clearly illustrating the transition from individual education to social and legislative education.
