Abstract

This research, titled “The Role of Scenography on Psychological and Artistic Foundations in Kurdish Theatre Performance,” is written using a descriptive and analytical methodology. It examines the psychological principles that influence scenography and the impact of scenographic design on theatrical perception and experience. The study is organized into five main chapters, each addressing a specific thematic aspect.

When placed within the framework of Kurdish theater, where the performance often struggles with themes of identity, displacement, oppression and hope, scenographic elements become not only aesthetic but also psychological and cultural communication tools. The physical space of the stage is transformed into a mental and emotional landscape and the internal conflicts of Kurdish society are externalized and determined.

Chapter One presents the framework of the research, including the problem statement, research objectives, significance, scope, methodology, and definitions of key terms relevant to the study.

Chapter Two outlines the theoretical framework in four sections.
The first section discusses theatrical scenography in Ancient Greece and how it was utilized both artistically and psychologically.
The second section explains fundamental concepts of psychology, referencing several major psychologists who examined the psychology of art.
The third section explores the aesthetic foundations of scenographic practice, supported with examples from international directors across different countries and eras.
The final section analyzes the role of scenography within Kurdish theatre, enriched with examples from cities across the four parts of Kurdistan as well as Kurdish performances outside the region.

Chapter Three clarifies the research procedures, including the research community, methodology, tools, sample selection, and analytical approach used to study three theatrical performances from the Kurdistan Region.

Chapter Four presents the results, discussing the extent to which the research objectives were achieved. It also provides several recommendations and practical suggestions, followed by a compilation of the references and sources used.
