Abstract

This study explores one of the approaches to interpreting the Qur’an, namely the scientific interpretation (Scientific Exegesis), which Is considered a modern method introduced into the field of Qur’anic exegesis. It represents an attempt by the exegete to harmonize the verses of the Qur’an with scientific knowledge. The research aims to clarify the conditions and guidelines that govern scientific interpretation, as some exegetes who have adopted this method have exceeded the bounds of the verses’ intended meanings, interpreting them in exaggerated ways. This is problematic, as the Qur’an was not revealed merely to present scientific theories; such an approach misrepresents its ultimate purpose—guiding humanity toward happiness in this life and the hereafter. Therefore, anyone who adopts this method must adhere to specific conditions and principles; otherwise, they risk deviating from the intended message and objective of the Divine Revelation.

The study examines this methodology through the book Al-Jawahir fi Tafsir al-Qur’an al-Karim: Containing the Marvels of the Wonders of Creation and the Extraordinary Verses of the Qur’an, commonly known as Tafsir al-Tanṭawi. The research is divided into two main sections. The first section addresses the concept of scientific interpretation, including its definition, origins, conditions, guidelines, and the opinions of scholars and exegetes regarding it. The second topic: Tantawi Jawhari and his interpretation Al-Jawahir — an introductory study with applied examples.
