Abstract

The concept of energy security has emerged as one of the most prominent security concepts that crystallized clearly in the post–Cold War era, amid the profound transformations witnessed by the international system. Security is no longer confined to its traditional military dimensions; rather, it has expanded to encompass economic, environmental, and human dimensions. Today, energy resources have acquired increasing importance for major industrial powers, as they constitute a decisive factor in achieving economic stability and ensuring national security. The significance of this study stems from the fact that China is undergoing a pivotal phase in its ascent as a major international power, where energy security represents one of the most critical strategic challenges it faces in light of rapid global transformations, volatility in energy markets, and the intensification of geopolitical competition. The study assumes that energy security constitutes a fundamental pillar of China’s national security and a key determinant in shaping its political and economic policies in the twenty-first century. This has been reflected in the prioritization of the energy sector within China’s grand strategies and international initiatives, most notably the Belt and Road Initiative. The study addresses China’s energy security through five main axes, examining the Chinese strategic perception of the concept of energy security, its core foundations, strategies for securing supply routes, as well as analyzing the role of energy within China’s cross-border initiatives and exploring their future prospects in light of global transformations.
