Syntactic Cohesion in the Poetry of Boutros Al-Bustani

Abstract

The world of literature is rich with famous figures throughout the ages, from ancient literature to modern literature, passing through the literature of the Renaissance—a period considered one of the richest in terms of these celebrities. These famous figures, through their works and literary output, represented a central pillar of literature in the era to which they belonged. They were notable points in literary history as well as in literary production. Perhaps one of the most prominent of these famous figures in the Renaissance was (Butrus al-Bustani), who was a writer, encyclopedist, educator, and historian. The study addresses syntactic links in the poetry of Boutros Al-Bustani; it focuses on presenting examples from his poetry to delve into the issue of syntactic coherence across different structures, whether nominal or verbal, in their various aspects (wording and meaning, unity of theme and purpose, rhythmic level). These aspects appear in different types of poetic structures and are interconnected, with none being separable or dispensable. This interconnectedness becomes clear in Al-Bustani's poetry across his diverse purposes, which the study will demonstrate through the presentation and in-depth analysis of examples, relying on the descriptive-analytical method to explore these examples according to the requirements of the study and its objectives.
