Abstract

Most scholars—particularly those specialized in Qur’anic exegesis—devoted exceptional attention to the Holy Qur’an, considering it the most significant of all texts due to its inclusion of the divine speech of Almighty God. This deep reverence encouraged them to explore every element connected to Qur’anic interpretation, aiming to uncover the precise meanings embedded within its verses. Their efforts involved establishing strict conditions for the interpreter and outlining the methodological principles required for accurate exegesis. Among the themes that drew considerable focus was linguistic context, which scholars viewed as essential for achieving a correct understanding of the revealed text

This research examines the importance of linguistic context in Qur’anic interpretation and is divided into two principal sections. The first section, titled “The Concept of Context among Scholars and Its Types,” investigates the linguistic and terminological definitions of context while clarifying why earlier scholars did not provide a formal technical definition. Their omission was rooted in the clarity of contextual indicators within their linguistic environment, which made explicit definitions unnecessary. However, as time progressed and the Islamic state expanded, the need to define and systematically articulate context became increasingly evident. The study then highlights the views of scholars from various fields, including linguists such as Al-Farahidi, Sibawayh, and Al-Anbari, followed by examinations of context within the sciences of jurisprudential principles and Qur’anic exegesis. The second section, titled “Uses of Linguistic Context,” begins by defining linguistic context and demonstrating its function through examples such as the terms “hal” and “qadā.” It further analyzes the major applications of linguistic context in classical tafsīr, including responding to alternative interpretations, clarifying meanings, determining stronger interpretive possibilities, and addressing issues of precedence and delay within verses.

The study concludes with several findings and a comprehensive list of sources.
