Abstract

The period between 1976 and 1986 represents a new period in the history of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (PDK). During this historical period, the PDK passed through two periods. The first period is in September 1976, it is known as Provisional Leadership. Following the setback of ( NISCO) of Aylul (September) Revolution of in March 1975, the KDP reorganized itself under a modern framework known as the Provisional Leadership (PL) to resume the struggle against the Iraqi government.

However, the emergence of ideological, political, and personal disputes led to the crystallization of two divergent currents (The Right Wing led by Idris Barzani and The Left Wing led by Sami Abdulrahman). Despite political interventions by Masoud Barzani to mitigate these tensions, internal divisions persisted. This culminated during the KDP’s congress in November 1979, when the Left Wing officially defected to establish a new organization called the Kurdistan People’s Democratic Party (KPDP).

The second period is between1979 and 1986 known as the period of Revival. This period has seen ups and downs and important and unwanted events. During this period, the split in the ranks of the PDK and its reflection on the relationship between the PDK and the PDK constitutes an important aspect of the history of the PDK.

This study, titled "The Schism Within the Ranks of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Its Reflections on Political Relations: The Kurdistan People’s Democratic Party as a Case Study (1976–1986)," aims to provide a documented historical analysis. It investigates the underlying causes of the split and examines how this fragmentation reshaped the political dynamics and interactions between these two entities.
