In recent years, growing attention has been directed toward international schools as a result of global challenges and rapid population growth. These schools contribute to fostering international interconnectedness, particularly in light of the contemporary need for citizens who possess the capacity to assume responsibility arising from global changes and emerging issues. Accordingly, international schools have assumed an important role in responding to global transformations.
In Iraq, the establishment of international schools began only in recent years. The Ministry of Education has played a significant role in licensing and supervising these schools in order to preserve cultural identity and to minimize potential violations. International education represents a linkage between the Iraqi educational system and the American curriculum, with instruction delivered in both English and Arabic. This ministerial curriculum has been supported through the development of structured study plans and the implementation of teacher training programs to ensure educators are adequately prepared to deliver the new curriculum effectively.
This study addresses several key aspects related to international schools, including the total number of international schools in Basra Governorate, which has reached (52) schools, of which (25) are in the city center and (27) are distributed across the districts and sub-districts of the governorate. The research further examines the geographical distribution of these schools and their spatial location within the governorate. Moreover, the study aims to identify the principal challenges facing international schools and to assess the feasibility of generalizing the principles of international education to all public education schools in Iraq.
