Urban Expansion in the Abu Ghraib District Center: A Study on Residential Complex Patterns and Their Geographic Impact

Abstract

The results of the study indicate that residential complexes in the center of Abu Ghraib District represent one of the most prominent manifestations of spatial transformation. They have contributed to reshaping the residential structure and directing population distribution toward new locations, particularly in areas close to major roads and modern urban expansion zones. The study revealed clear variations among residential complexes in terms of planning suitability. Completed complexes, especially Bahjat Baghdad Complex, achieved a high level of success due to the availability of infrastructure and essential services. In contrast, some other complexes, such as Al-Zeitoun Complex, faced challenges related to increased population density, which resulted in pressure on services and transportation networks.
As for the proposed residential complexes, such as Al-Khaleej Complex and Ishq Baghdad Complex, they demonstrated good planning potential in terms of design and land-use distribution. However, since their implementation has not yet been completed, their evaluation remains largely theoretical and based more on planning schemes than on actual conditions. The study also showed that residential complexes have had a clear geographical impact through changes in land-use patterns, variations in service distribution, and increased pressure on certain transportation networks. Moreover, they have contributed to creating new centers for attracting residents within the study area.
Based on these findings, the study concludes that the efficiency of residential complexes in achieving a positive geographical impact depends primarily on the extent to which they comply with planning standards. This highlights the importance of sound urban planning in achieving balanced spatial development within the center of Abu Ghraib District.
