Abstract

This study examines Hebrew linking words as key elements in building textual cohesion in written media discourse. It analyzes selected examples from the newspapers Yedioth Ahronoth and Haaretz between 2020 and 2025. The study is based on the assumption that linking words not only serve a grammatical function but also contribute to organizing logical and semantic connections between parts of the text, and direct the reader to a specific understanding or position.

The study focuses on analyzing the actual use of linking words in Hebrew texts, classifying them according to the type of connection they create (cause, condition, result, time, contrast, etc.), and then examining their role in achieving textual cohesion at both the syntactic and pragmatic levels.

The study reveals that linking words are used differently between the two newspapers. Haaretz tends to use linking words of an analytical and interpretive nature, while Yedioth Ahronoth shows a tendency towards direct linking words with an informative or descriptive function. The findings also reveal recurring patterns in the construction of media arguments, in which linking words are used to justify positions, to frame events, or to create a logical sequence that contributes to persuading the reader.

The study emphasizes the importance of linking words in shaping the structure of media texts in Hebrew and emphasizes the need for the researcher as keys to understanding the linguistic and contextual structure of contemporary Hebrew journalistic discourse.
