The Role of University Media in Promoting Student Awareness of the Dangers of Drugs: A Field Study in Iraqi Universities

This study addressed the role of university media in raising student awareness of the dangers of drugs in Iraqi universities, as a strategic tool capable of directly reaching university students and influencing their attitudes and behaviors. The importance of the study stemmed from the lack of previous academic interest in the role of university media compared to general media, despite its importance in the current Iraqi environment.
The study relied on a descriptive analytical approach using a questionnaire distributed to a sample of (250) male and female students from Iraqi public and private universities. The questionnaire covered six main topics, including: the reality of university media, the quality of media messages, awareness channels, the impact of university media on awareness and behavior, obstacles, and student attitudes.
The results showed that university media contributes significantly to raising student awareness of the dangers of drugs, particularly through digital media and interactive activities. However, it faces challenges related to weak funding, the absence of long-term strategies, and a shortage of qualified personnel. The results also confirmed that students adopt positive attitudes toward university media and are willing to participate in its awareness-raising activities. The study concluded with a set of recommendations, most notably: the need to adopt sustainable media plans, involve students in media campaigns, invest in interactive digital content, and enhance cooperation between universities, government agencies, and media institutions, all of which will contribute to building an anti-drug student culture.
