Abstract

This study examines the concept of dialogue as a civilized means of mutual understanding between individuals and groups, and as a tool for achieving coexistence and cooperation within society. The research aims to clarify the rules and etiquettes that should be observed during dialogue, based on the texts of the Holy Qur’an and the Prophetic Sunnah, considering dialogue as a means of communication, resolving disagreements, and promoting understanding among individuals and communities.             The study begins by defining dialogue both linguistically and terminologically, and by explaining its importance in resolving conflicts and exchanging viewpoints. It also discusses the concept of dialogue in Islam as a Qur’anic and Prophetic approach to engaging with those who hold differing views, and as a method for clarifying truths through evidence and argumentation. The study then reviews the etiquettes of dialogue encouraged in Islamic teachings, including humility, attentive listening, gentleness in speech, self-restraint, avoiding mockery and ridicule, and respecting the opinions of others. Furthermore, the research outlines the fundamental principles of dialogue, such as commitment to truthfulness, clarity of purpose, reliance on evidence, consideration of the audience’s circumstances, avoidance of futile argumentation, and respect for time. The study supports these principles with Qur’anic verses that emphasize such values, including the verse: “Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction, and argue with them in a way that is best” (Qur’an: An-Nahl:125), as well as Prophetic traditions that recommend gentleness and tolerance in dialogue.             The conclusion of the study emphasizes that dialogue in Islam is not merely a means of expressing opinions, but rather a comprehensive approach to fostering understanding and rapprochement, which can lead to unity and social cohesion when participants adhere to the ethical and legal guidelines established in Islamic teachings.
