Abstract

In the contemporary era, governance of society and state administration encompassed several fundamental issues that require researchers and academic institutions to investigate and address. To this end, this study examines the role of good governance in achieving sustainable development, highlighting the interdependence between effective management, institutional integrity, and long-term well-being. Furthermore, it discusses the principles of establishing good governance, such as transparency, accountability, participation, and rule of law, while simultaneously addressing the contribution of these principles as a solid foundation for sustained progress across economic, social, and environmental dimensions.

Theoretically, the study defines the concepts of sustainable development (conceptual evolution) and good governance. Moreover, drawing upon the framework proposed by Madou (2005), the research identifies eight fundamental characteristics of good governance and their contribution to sustainable development, namely: transparency, responsiveness, consensus-building, accountability, equity and inclusiveness, among others. Conversely, this study explores how poor governance can hinder development through instability, inequality, unemployment, corruption, and environmental degradation.

In conclusion, employing a descriptive-analytical method, the study explicates the bidirectional relationship between governance and sustainability, demonstrating that good governance facilitates sustainable development, while sustainable development, in turn, strengthens the foundations of good governance.
