Abstract

In recent years, the integration of mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) technology has completely altered the English language learning environment. Among those tools is Duolingo, a learning platform that is known to have improved numerous English language skills. This current paper aims to explore the effectiveness of Duolingo in improving the fluency of English language speaking skills among Iraqi high school students. This research will take a blended approach in terms of methodology, especially when it comes to examining theories related to online strategies of learning English, communicative competency theories, as well as those related to enhancing one’s oral English competency. In addition, it will take an experimental form that will seek to establish whether students have managed to enhance their fluency in English prior to and after engaging with Duolingo. This paper assumes that continuous engagement with online activities and vocal feedback tools available at Duolingo can contribute greatly to improving students’ English fluency skills. This paper uses pre- and post-experiments, as well as data gathered from formal interviews and observation checklists. Results showed that students who have undergone training at Duolingo have increased their English fluency skills measured in rate of talking, word choice, and smoother vocal expressions. This paper highlights the increasing role of online learning arenas to enhance EFL motivation and engagement. This paper provides a crucial insight to education theory and practice in creating harmony between online learning strategies and communicative objectives.
