Abstract
This study examines poetic language and stylistic deviations in Ahlam Mosteghanemi’s novel Chaos of the Senses, considering them among the major components that contribute to the distinctive character and aesthetic quality of its narrative discourse. The study approaches novelistic language as an active element in the construction of meaning rather than merely a means of conveying events. It investigates how language moves from direct expression toward suggestive expression based on condensation, imagery, repetition, and rhythm.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach and is divided into four sections. The first examines manifestations of poetic language in the novel, particularly condensation, suggestion, repetition, parallelism, and poetic imagery. The second focuses on stylistic deviations at the syntactic and semantic levels, including fronting and postponement, repetition and parallelism, as well as metaphor, personification, irony, and antithesis. The third investigates the role of deviation in constructing rhythm, imagery, character, space, memory, and narrative movement. The fourth examines the aesthetic, psychological, semantic, and narrative functions of stylistic deviations.
The study concludes that deviation in Chaos of the Senses is not merely a departure from ordinary linguistic usage or a decorative device; rather, it performs a structural function in shaping the text and producing its meanings. The analysis also demonstrates that poetic language interacts with the narrative structure to reveal the psychological experience of the characters, reshape space and memory, and contribute to the organization of rhythm and narrative movement. The study ultimately argues that the novel’s poetic quality is founded on the interaction between language, deviation, and narrative vision, whereby language becomes an essential component in constructing the story and producing its aesthetic and semantic dimensions.
