The Social Determinants of Creativity and Innovation Among Postgraduate Students_ A Field Study at the University of Babylon

Abstract

This study focuses on the most important social determinants that affect the level of creativity and innovation. It examined a number of social factors, such as the family environment, economic status, and university culture, as key elements that can hinder or enhance students' creative abilities. The study relied on sociological theories such as (social motivation theory) and (social learning theory) to understand the relationship between social determinants and the creativity and innovation of graduate students. The results showed that there is a statistically significant relationship between social support from the family and university and the level of creativity, while economic conditions and social pressures constituted prominent obstacles to innovation. It was also found that a university environment that encourages freedom of thought and initiative is closely linked to the growth of students' innovative abilities. The study's results also confirmed that the development of creativity and innovation among graduate students does not depend solely on individual abilities, but is also affected by the availability of a supportive university environment that encourages scientific research, collaborative work, exchange of experiences, and the provision of necessary resources and capabilities. Encouraging faculty members and motivating students to participate in scientific and research activities also contributes to enhancing creative thinking and developing the ability to produce innovative ideas that contribute to serving society and development. The study concluded with several recommendations, the most important of which is the need to provide a stimulating academic environment, provide psychological and material support to graduate students, and promote a culture of creativity within the university.
