The Iraqi colloquial language in the classical poetic text of Shaker Al-Tamimi

Abstract

In many modern poetic experiments, especially in Iraq, colloquial language has become an integral part of poetic identity. It is used to create poetic images with a local specificity and contributes to conveying emotional experience in a language closer to reality and more capable of suggestion. This research aims to study and analyze the use of Iraqi colloquial language in the classical poetic texts of Shaker Hadi Al-Tamimi, focusing on analyzing its aesthetic and communicative impact on the recipient. The research relies on a descriptive and analytical approach to monitor how Al-Tamimi blends classical and colloquial Arabic in his poems, whether through vocabulary or structures, and how he addresses this overlap in simulating poetic meaning and rhythm. The research highlights that Al-Tamimi employs colloquial language in an artistic and literary manner that is consistent with Iraqi cultural identity, bringing poetry closer to lived reality while preserving symbolic depth. It also reveals the functions of colloquial language in shaping satirical or tragic poetic images and enhancing dialogue between text and recipient. The results demonstrate that this use of colloquial Arabic is not a linguistic weakness, but rather a rebellion against traditionalism and a means of renewing poetic rhetoric. The study confirms that this blend of classical Arabic and colloquial Arabic is not merely a departure from classical rules, but rather an innovative method for renewing Arabic poetry and expanding its expressive horizons. It also highlights how the colloquial dialect can be employed to deepen communication with the reader, while preserving the aesthetics of classical poetry. It integrates the colloquial language in an artistic manner that harmonizes with Iraqi cultural identity, bringing poetry closer to daily reality while preserving its symbolic depth. The research also reveals the role of colloquial Arabic in shaping diverse poetic images, whether satirical or tragic, and in fostering dialogue between text and recipient. Al-Tamimi's linguistic use highlights his ability to challenge poetic tradition and enrich contemporary rhetoric, without this constituting a weakness in the linguistic structure.
