The Manifestations of Verbal Irony and Visual Irony in Mohammed Khudair's Short Stories

Abstract

Irony is a critical expression of a creative technical reality in literary texts. Irony is defined as a method of expression in which the hidden meaning contradicts or contradicts the words that often agree with the superficial meaning of speech. Irony is performed in different forms and degrees, and one of its most prominent forms is irony, verbal and pictorial paradox.

Among the literary arts that have been concerned with employing irony is the art of the short story. Because the term irony has entered the arena of Arab literature recently, the short story is also considered one of the newly emerging literary arts in the Arab world. Therefore, her book was interested in employing modern literary techniques in shaping its written structure, such as paradox. Among the most prominent storywriters in Iraq and the Arab world is the storyteller and novelist Muhammad Khudair, who excelled in writing short stories and novels. The technique of irony in its various forms is a prominent feature of his short story texts.

In this study, the researcher attempts to investigate the presence of this phenomenon in selected examples of his short stories. The extent of his skill in employing verbal and pictorial irony, which are the most evident types of irony in his texts. The researcher finds out the impact of that employment and its contributions to his narrative from an aesthetic and corrective perspective.
