Antonio De Olivera Salazar and his domestic in Portugal

Abstract

Portugal is one of the old colonial powers, and was the focus of attention of many countries around the world, especially since it had foreign colonies that allowed it to maintain its position among the colonial powers in the world. This is what made the researcher choose Portugal as the subject of the study to address its domestic policy from 1932 to 1968, the period that witnessed the emergence of a powerful figure known as Antonio de Oliveira Salazar. The study, which contained an introduction and a preface reviewing Salazar’s upbringing and his assumption of the position of Minister of Finance until his arrival to the presidency of the government. The research also addressed the new state and the elimination of labor unions 1934-1939 and the internal situation of Portugal during World War II, in addition to the internal developments in Portugal until 1968.

Salazar succeeded in directly interfering in the elections that took place in Portugal over the years in which he became Prime Minister, to impose his candidate, and their victory in the elections. This is the most controversial matter in Portugal and caused him many problems. However, due to his strict policy, he kept them away from power, thus preserving his regime for a long time until he reached 1968 when he suffered a stroke that ended his life. In the end, Salazar succeeded greatly in preserving the republican regime for a long time, but that regime became dependent on his presence, and with its end, the disintegration began, ending with a coup in 1974 that overthrew the regime of his country, which he had preserved so much, and changed the map of Portugal, leaving it without foreign colonies.
