Abstract

This study aims to highlight Yemen’s position on the political developments in Iraq from 1979-1988 AD, which is a historical period full of political events. The study required the use of the historical research method in analyzing and tracking the events. The study was divided, in addition to the introduction, conclusion, and introduction, into four axes. The introduction dealt with the problem of the study. Its importance and objectives, while the introductory introduction dealt with the political developments that Iraq witnessed during the sixties and seventies. The first axis dealt with Saddam Hussein’s arrival to power in Iraq and the position of the Yemen Arab Republic towards him, while the second axis dealt with the Iran-Iraq war, while the third axis reviewed the position of the Arab Republic. Yemen from the Iran-Iraq war from 1980-1985 AD. As for the fourth and final axis, it dealt with the position of the Yemen Arab Republic on the development of the course of the Iran-Iraq war from 1985-1988 AD.

           These relations witnessed a remarkable development, especially after President Ali Abdullah Saleh assumed power in Yemen and Saddam Hussein assumed the presidency of Iraq. This contributed to the development of relations and coordination between the two parties, with regard to defending Arab issues that were suffering from broad political challenges, which contributed to the development of relations and coordination between the two parties. Finding a common formula between them to protect their interests in the Arab region.

         The study came out with a number of results, perhaps the most prominent of which is the continuation of the Yemen Arab Republic’s firm and well-established position with Iraq until the end of the war, including: The position of the Yemen Arab Republic was distinguished by its political welcome of the process of political transfer of power in Iraq from President Ahmed Hussein al-Bakr to his deputy Saddam Hussein in 1979, in addition to that. The Yemen Arab Republic supported Iraq's position in its war with Iran from the first moment it broke out in September 1980. Likewise, the Yemen Arab Republic maintained its firm position of helping Iraq in the war and did not hide this support throughout the war until its end in 1988.
