(The city of Ictania: A study of its political and military conditions until the end of the Islamic presence there)

Abstract

The study of cities and all the activities taking place within them, whether political, economic, social, urban, intellectual, or otherwise, is a very important aspect. This is particularly true of cities that played a significant and influential role in the Crusades, whether positive or negative. Through this study, we can draw lessons and morals, as it helps shed light on the subtleties of matters and monitor the movement of cultural development within these cities. This is something that general, comprehensive studies of a region or an entire country may be unable to achieve.

It is well known that Muslims ruled Andalusia and some cities in Gaul for a period of 92 AH – 897 AH. They established a remarkable civilization there that left its mark on history, making it difficult for any scholar to ignore. One of the most important aspects of this civilization was the role of cities in various aspects, particularly military and political. Each city had its own unique situation in terms of conquest, settlement, organization, and relationship with the center of the Arab Islamic state, as well as with neighboring cities and countries. This was not to mention the conflicts these cities had with Christians and the events that led to their downfall.

From this perspective, we have studied the city of Aquitaine in Gaul . It represents a microcosm of Andalusian Islamic history during that era, with all its stages of prosperity and decline, unity and fragmentation. Furthermore, cities are characterized by their natural and social characteristics, which allowed them to enjoy a great deal of autonomy, particularly those in which states, ruling families, and revolutions arose, most notably the city of Aquitaine.

 We will try to review the geographical nature of the city, due to its impact on the course of general history. Then we will explain the political history of the city, starting with the Islamic conquest until its fall at the hands of the Christians and the end of Islamic rule there.
