Abstract

This research addresses the field of Qur’anic history in terms of its concept, significance, and chronological development. It seeks to highlight the historical dimension of the Qur’anic text and its role in understanding the trajectory of divine revelation and the Islamic message. The study explores the stages of the Qur’an’s revelation, collection, and codification, while analyzing the factors that shaped the arrangement of its verses and chapters within a specific temporal framework. Such an approach enhances both scholarly and exegetical awareness of the Qur’an’s discourse and its interaction with the realities of early Islamic society.

The research also investigates the close relationship between Qur’anic history and other Qur’anic sciences, such as the study of the causes of revelation (asbāb al-nuzūl), the Meccan and Medinan classifications, variant readings, and abrogation (naskh), all of which are essential tools for textual comprehension. Furthermore, it examines the primary sources of this discipline in the Islamic scholarly tradition—spanning exegetical, historical, and legal works—while also engaging with the contributions of Orientalist scholars who approached the subject through critical-historical methodologies. The study presents a comparative analysis of the methodologies of Muslim scholars, which relied on reliable transmission and textual preservation, and Orientalist approaches, often characterized by modernist assumptions and critical hypotheses.

Adopting a descriptive-analytical methodology, the research incorporates direct quotations, extensive footnotes, and rigorous documentation from Shi‘i, Sunni, and academic sources. The findings conclude that the study of Qur’anic history constitutes a fundamental pillar for understanding the development of the Qur’anic discourse in its historical context, strengthens the authenticity of the Qur’anic text, and contributes to objective interpretation while effectively responding to both classical and contemporary doubts.
