Map representation of groundwater characteristics of the Salman area, southwest of Muthanna Governorate

Abstract:

 Al-Salman area is located in the southwestern corner on the border between Iraq and Saudi Arabia, the area has very important strategic aspects for Iraq. Groundwater is the only source of fresh water in the area. Hydrogeochemical characterizations of groundwater in the area were conducted, to assess the quality of groundwater and its suitability for drinking and irrigation purposes. The qualitative characteristics of groundwater were represented maps on the study area using IDW technology, by means of geographic information systems, as well as clarifying the variation in these characteristics, which confirmed the study the difference of these characteristics between the wells of the study area.

The study recommends proper groundwater exploitation for sustainable development in the study area. Maintaining groundwater quality from factors that could alter its chemical properties, particularly water seeping into the ground from factories in the study area, is also recommended. Increasing groundwater well drilling in the study area is also recommended to accommodate and concentrate nomadic populations.
