The Role of Islamic Texts in Achieving the Unity of the Ummah: An Analytical Study

This research offers an objective analytical study on the role of Islamic texts—namely, the Holy Qur’an and the noble Sunnah—in establishing the unity of the Muslim Ummah. The study highlights the centrality of the principle of al-jama‘ah (the collective body) as one of the major purposes of Islamic law (maqasid al-shari‘ah). It addresses the Qur’anic commands and Prophetic traditions related to unity and warns against division, citing foundational texts such as: “And hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not become divided,” and the Prophet’s saying: “You must stick to the group, for the Hand of Allah is with the group.”
The study is based on the problem: How have Islamic texts contributed to affirming the principle of unity within the Ummah? And what are the key factors that have hindered its realization in the Muslim reality? The research seeks to outline the legal foundations of unity, analyze the key texts that support it, and identify the primary causes of division, such as divergent interpretations and sectarian or political conflicts.
The research adopts an inductive-analytical method in tracing and examining relevant textual evidence within the framework of Islamic objectives. It also benefits from scholarly interpretations and exegetical commentary. The significance of the study lies in its focus on the scriptural dimension of unity-a topic often overlooked in contemporary discourse-by returning to the foundational guidance of revelation.
The study concludes that unity in Islam is not merely a sociopolitical necessity, but a legal and theological obligation. Islamic texts address it as part of creed and conduct, often linking disunity with tribulation, weakness, and defeat. The study recommends strengthening the discourse of unity in religious education, da‘wah, and pedagogical programs, grounded in the foundational texts to foster enlightened collective awareness.
