The position of the Secretary-General of the Arab League, Abdul Rahman Azzam, on the political developments in Yemen 1946-1948

Abstract

The Secretary-General of any regional or international organization is a pivotal element in the success of that organization, whether from a political or administrative perspective, based on his powers and ability to represent it effectively. In the League of Arab States, the Secretary-General plays an important and influential role in formulating decisions and managing the workflow. Despite the prominent political contributions made by Abdul Rahman Azzam during his tenure as president of the League, opinions about his personality varied. There are those who support him and those who criticize him, and each party has its arguments, but reality shows that he provided great services in various political issues, especially with regard to supporting the independence of Arab countries. It is also noted that Azzam tended towards the Saudi-Egyptian axis in Arab issues, and for this reason, we must re-evaluate his role according to modern scientific methods, while relying on available documents, not with the aim of detracting from his personality or glorifying it, but rather to put it in its proper place within modern Arab history. It is also necessary to clarify the extent of his influence on the course of international events and determine whether he succeeded in leading the League on the Arab level. We will research and answer these questions in the folds of this research, as well as his position on the 1948 Yemeni coup, and his relationship with the men of the coup government.
