A Geographical Analysis of the Drug Abuse Problem in Kirkuk Governorate in 2023

: The phenomenon of drug abuse is one of the biggest problems that has cast its shadow over human society. It is a global phenomenon that affects individuals and societies. Drugs are chemical substances that affect the central nervous system and cause changes in the psychological state and mood of the human being. Some drugs are used for medical purposes, while others are used illegally for recreational purposes, which leads to addiction and health and social problems. Studies in this field have proven that drug abuse kills a person, paralyzes his mind, and leads him to commit various types of crimes. The importance of this research stems from the danger involved in drug abuse, which poses a major threat to society if we know that it targets the youth segment, which is relied upon in the renaissance and development of any society. It also provides data that supports the formulation of effective policies to combat the phenomenon of drug abuse. Understanding the phenomenon also contributes to identifying the causes and factors that affect drug abuse, which enhances scientific knowledge in this field. This research addresses the problem of drug abuse in Kirkuk Governorate. The descriptive and analytical approach was used in its completion. The research achieved several results, the most prominent of which is the clear disparity in the distribution of drug abusers among the administrative units in the region. The study revealed that married individuals accounted for the largest share of drug users, representing approximately 45% of the total number of drug users in Kirkuk Governorate. Furthermore, certain age groups emerged with higher rates of drug use, particularly among young people aged 20-49 years. Family disintegration and bad companionship were among the most prominent causes of drug use in Kirkuk Governorate. Crystal meth was found to be the drug whose use accounted for over 90% of all drug use.
