Abstract

This research aims to study some aspects of grammatical interpretation in the Explanation for Ibn Asfur's Jumal and his stance on grammatical texts that conflict with grammatical rules. It investigates how Ibn Asfur reconciles texts that deviate from the rules by using grammatical interpretations present in his explanations, such as Addition, precedence and delay, Inbuilt of the meaning and inclusion. The research concludes with several key findings. One of the main findings is that interpretation indicates diverting speech from its apparent meaning through various manifestations, including Addition, precedence and delay, Inbuilt of the meaning and inclusion. This reflects the flexibility of the Arabic language and its strength and richness, aiding in the understanding of texts that seem to contradict grammatical rules. Additionally, Ibn Asfur aligns with the Basran school of thought, which often resorts to interpretation due to the conflict between texts and their grammatical rules, unlike the Kufians who accept all auditory evidence and base their judgments on it. Interpretation is the diversion of speech from its apparent meaning by means of appearances, and its manifestations include: addition, interpretation, implication, and precedence and delay. Interpretation achieves two basic goals: the correctness of the rules and the integrity of the texts. By tracing the manifestations of interpretation in explaining sentences, we note that the majority of the Basrans are the ones who resort to interpretation the most, as a result of the text clashing with their grammatical rules, unlike the Kufians who accept everything they hear and measure it by it.
