Abstract

The thematic interpretation of the Qur’an is one of the most prominent approaches developed to analyze Qur’anic texts in a manner that transcends the traditional verse-by-verse interpretation. However, the characterization of this type of exegesis has sparked considerable debate among scholars and exegetes. Their views and proposals regarding its definition and methodological parameters vary widely, reflecting their individual objectives and preferences. Consequently, the descriptions of thematic interpretation have ranged from being incomplete and insufficiently comprehensive to being overly broad and imprecise.

It is well-established that the study of thematic interpretation remains a relatively new field within the broader discipline of Qur’anic exegesis. Historically, the concept of Tafsir (exegesis) was predominantly associated with sequential interpretation (Tafsir Tartibi), which interprets the Qur’an verse by verse. However, the emergence of thematic interpretation has necessitated a more precise distinction between these two approaches. This shift requires scholars and practitioners to specify their intended meaning when referring to “interpretation” (Tafsir): does it refer to the traditional sequential approach, or to what is now known as thematic interpretation?

One of the primary challenges associated with thematic interpretation lies in the diversity of scholars’ and researchers’ perspectives on formulating a clear, comprehensive, and exclusive definition. Another significant issue, equally important, is the lack of consensus on determining its historical origins and developmental trajectory. These ongoing debates have underscored the need for a more holistic and scientifically grounded framework to conceptualize thematic interpretation accurately.

This study, therefore, seeks to establish the foundations of this exegetical approach by offering a logical and precise definition, tracing its origins and stages of development, and providing a temporal framework for its emergence. Additionally, it aims to clarify the conceptual dimensions of thematic interpretation and explore its practical applications in contemporary contexts. The study achieves this by examining the methodology of Sheikh Muhammad Al-Ya’qoubi as exemplified in his thematic exegesis titled ( Min Noor Al-Qur’an ).
