Abstract

Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah is the cradle and the foundation of the Islamic State, ranking as the second holiest site after Holy Mecca. It served as the primary center for the dissemination of knowledge and culture. During the era of the Prophet (PBUH) (1-11 AH), the city played a pivotal role in constructing the Islamic State and forming an integrated society. With the migration (Hijrah) of the Prophet (PBUH) and his followers, the city of "Yathrib" was transformed into a city carrying new religious, political, and civilizational dimensions, renamed "The City of the Prophet (PBUH)" or "Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah." It was established on the foundations of sound Islamic creed to organize the community and regulate the affairs of its diverse inhabitants through a just system of coexistence.

During that era, Medina witnessed the birth of a unified society. The Prophet’s Mosque stood as the central hub for worship, science, and education, as well as the administrative center for state affairs. From the mosque, the call to Islam (Dawah) began, and the primary foundations of knowledge were established based on the Holy Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). Furthermore, Medina served as a milieu for social coexistence, housing a diverse population that included Muslims (Muhajirun and Ansar), Jews, and groups of Christians, polytheists, and hypocrites.

On a scientific and cultural level, Al-Madinah Al-Munawwarah was the starting point for an unprecedented intellectual movement. Literacy flourished there, and many of the Prophet’s Companions played prominent roles in the fields of science, culture, and poetry. Consequently, the city was regarded as a fundamental civilizational cornerstone for the Islamic world.
