Abstract

Childhood autism is one of the most significant and serious conditions affecting young children. It is a complex phenomenon characterized by psychological, mental, and behavioral disorders, and its prevalence has recently increased due to several contributing factors. The importance of this research lies in its realistic portrayal of this phenomenon in Kirkuk through fieldwork. This is crucial because autism represents a fundamental problem that directly impacts society and has a negative effect, making it an important step in community development and building. The research also aims to determine the extent of autism in Kirkuk, its distribution patterns and spatial variations, and the demographic and social characteristics of children with autism. Furthermore, it seeks to understand the educational and marital characteristics of their families, identify the main causes of autism in children, and explore treatment options

The research required the use of a range of scientific research methodologies, including descriptive and analytical approaches, the latter being particularly effective in analyzing temporal and spatial variations. To supplement data on children with autism spectrum disorder, a field study was conducted to gather information that the researcher was unable to obtain from official sources. The study revealed several types of autism in the study area, including mild, moderate, and severe autism. The most prevalent type, according to the research findings, was moderate autism, also known as classic autism, accounting for %)43.3 (of the total autism cases in the research sample. The researcher recommends raising community awareness about how to interact with children with autism, emphasizing the importance of developing their skills and adopting modern principles that contribute to their acceptance as valuable and active members of society.
