Abstract

The limited information raises many questions about the biography of Abū al-Qāsim al-Zahrawi, as recorded in most historical sources and references. Historians and scholars who wrote about him varied in both the extent and accuracy of the information they provided, particularly in its type and the period of its recording. Most of what has reached us consists of scattered references here and there.

For example, Ibn Abī Uṣaybiʿah, who often elaborated at great length in praising various figures—especially prominent physicians—restricted his account of al-Zahrawi to a single brief paragraph: “He was a virtuous physician, well-versed in both simple and compound drugs, skilled in treatment, and the author of well-known works in the art of medicine. The best of these is his great book known as al-Zahrawi  "

The book “Al-Tasrif” consists of thirty scientific treatises, a fact which al-Zahrawi affirmed at the beginning of his work, stating: “The entirety of this book is thirty treatises.” He then outlined the content of each treatise through its title. Each treatise is further divided into chapters, and each chapter contains a collection of descriptions or prescriptions.

Although every treatise addresses an independent subject, the reader senses a continuity, as each one complements the previous. In general, al-Zahrawi examined all branches of medicine, pharmacy, dentistry, and surgery. This reflects his thorough and meticulous study of difficult and philosophically complex works, which he reorganized to make the material easier to consult in both writing and reading.

Al-Zahrawi’s methodological approach in his medical treatises was distinctly scientific, which granted his work great significance and enduring importance in the field of medicine.

The author Al-Zahrawi, in his book "Al-Tasrif liman ajaz an altaleef," demonstrated the ability to write in a clear and persuasive style, focusing on originality and innovation while emphasizing accuracy and reliability of information. The book includes several essential steps, starting with invoking God and praising Him for His blessings, followed by the organization of the book, attention to the works of others and methods of transmission, careful presentation of examples, evidence, and reliance on experience, as well as observation and listening. It culminates in the use of a critical descriptive approach and a focus on language that effectively communicates the information .
