My research, entitled "Spatial Structure in the Novel 'Sleeping in the Cherry Orchard,'" presents a structural picture of place as an active element in this novel. Its author (Azhar Jirjis) skillfully uses place as a framework for the events that reflect the life of the character (Saeed), making him a symbol representing the condition of many Iraqi figures who lived through the temporal conflict in the period before and after the fall of the regime. The research explores how the place represented a hostile environment that drove the character away from his homeland. Through the spatial element and its relationship to other narrative elements, the narrator, using descriptive language to convey the dimensions of place, paints a picture for the reader that explains the nature of the setting and how it influenced the transmission of events at specific moments in time. It also examines how place creates an impact on the characters at a particular moment, a moment that could not hold the same significance at another point in their lives.
The research begins with a theoretical introduction that clarifies the concepts of structure and place as elements of the novel's narrative construction. It then explores the relationship between place, character, time, and event, analyzing applied examples from the novel "Sleeping in the Cherry Orchard." The Cherry Field illustrates the relationship of the place to other elements of the narrative. I then mentioned the most important results I reached from my study of this topic, along with a list of sources.
