This research aims to identify the current status of the library at the College of Education for Girls at the University of Basra, specifically regarding its collection, services, and procedures. The research employed a descriptive (case study) approach for the practical aspect, and a documentary approach using both traditional and electronic information sources for the theoretical aspect. Interviews were used to collect data for the research, and several findings were reached. The most significant findings included the limited physical space of the library, which led to overlapping functions between its various sections, thus failing to meet the standards of a model or high-quality library. Another finding was the shortage of qualified staff specializing in information and library science, which negatively impacts the services offered by the library. Based on these findings, the research recommends expanding the library building by adding another floor and ensuring that each section is physically separated from the others. It also recommends providing the library with additional staff members specializing in information and library science.
The shortage of qualified personnel in the field of information and library science negatively impacts the services provided by the library. The library offers CD-ROM services, copying the information users need onto a disc. It provides all types of lending services, both internal and external. There is a shortage of equipment and furniture, including printers and photocopiers. The library uses the Dewey Decimal Classification system to classify its holdings.
