Abstract

There is no doubt that the Imams of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) devoted great attention to reforming human behavior and building the personality of the Muslim individual, for this constitutes the foundation upon which social reform is built and through which the divine purpose of human stewardship on earth is fulfilled—namely, the reformation of the world and the optimal utilization of its economic resources. In modern times, this process has been expressed through various concepts such as personality building, growth, and economic, social, and human development, which are now addressed within specialized fields like psychology, economics, and sociology through theories and ideas concerned with psychological and social reform as a means to achieve the desired economic progress.

Contrary to Western claims that such concepts were absent from the Arab-Islamic civilization and originated solely from Western thought, the reality is otherwise. The Imams of Ahl al-Bayt (peace be upon them) were pioneers in focusing on the sound formation of the human personality to ensure that individuals become agents of moral and social reform rather than sources of destruction to values and principles. Imam Ja‘far al-Sadiq’s (peace be upon him) efforts in this regard were particularly evident, especially after the political authorities of the Umayyad and Abbasid periods neglected such concerns. His thought reflects a comprehensive vision of human development through the enhancement of health, education, and knowledge acquisition, enabling individuals to employ these capacities in social, economic, cultural, and political reconstruction. He also emphasized the preservation of civil and political rights and freedoms and the provision of a dignified standard of living for individuals and families—foundations essential to the building of both the person and society.
