This study examines the semantic implications of vocative expressions in the poetry of Professor Dr. Ahmed Muslim Jasim Al-Khayyal, by analyzing their diverse uses and revealing their expressive and artistic potentials. The findings indicate that vocatives in his poetry do not remain confined to their conventional grammatical function of alerting or calling, but rather transcend it to become an effective tool for highlighting emotional experiences and expressing psychological and intellectual states.
The research shows that vocatives in Al-Khayyal’s poetry serve primarily rhetorical and symbolic purposes, as they rarely appear in their direct, literal form. Instead, the poet employs them to invoke religious, heroic, and national symbols, thereby imbuing his works with emotional depth and semantic richness. This stylistic choice contributes to structuring the poetic text, intensifying its emotional charge, and establishing vocative expressions as a distinctive feature of his poetic experience.
The study concludes that vocatives in Al-Khayyal’s poetry represent a unique stylistic phenomenon, enabling him to integrate grammatical, semantic, and rhetorical dimensions. This integration grants his poetry vitality and aesthetic appeal, while enhancing its capacity to move and influence the reader.
