Abstract

Peaceful coexistence constitutes one of the fundamental pillars for managing diversity and achieving stability in societies characterized by multiple identities. It facilitates the regulation of relations among different social groups on the basis of recognition of differences, mutual respect, citizenship, and the rejection of violence and exclusion. The significance of this concept is particularly evident in the Iraqi context, given the country’s religious, sectarian, and ethnic diversity, as well as the conflicts and divisions it has experienced over the past decades, which have adversely affected social peace and political stability. Against this backdrop, this study aims to analyze the role of peaceful coexistence in managing sectarian and ethnic conflicts in Iraq, examine its foundations within Islamic thought, and explore its relationship with social and political stability and the management of diversity. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by examining the relevant literature and texts on peaceful coexistence, identifying the religious and intellectual foundations that underpin it, and subsequently applying these foundations to the analysis of the Iraqi case as an empirical context. The study also examines the role of peaceful coexistence in mitigating conflicts and promoting stability, while highlighting the institutional and societal mechanisms required to consolidate it, particularly through inclusive citizenship, political inclusion, dialogue, education, and the promotion of trust among the various components of society. The study concludes that peaceful coexistence is not merely an ethical or social value, but rather constitutes a political and societal mechanism for managing diversity and conflicts. Its consolidation contributes to strengthening political and social stability and reducing manifestations of division, exclusion, and violence. The study further concludes that the success of peaceful coexistence in the Iraqi context depends on the capacity of political, social, and educational institutions to establish an inclusive framework of citizenship, manage differences peacefully, and ensure equality in rights and duties. Such an approach can strengthen national unity and reduce the likelihood of diversity becoming a source of conflict.
