Al-Maqrizi’s Method in Documenting the History of the Fatimid State and Its Impact on Historical Studies

Abstract

          Taqi al-Din al-Maqrizi adopted a historical method in documenting the history of the Fatimid State that relied on collecting accounts from multiple sources, then comparing, analyzing, and critically examining them in order to reach a more accurate historical narrative. This approach is clearly reflected in his works, especially in his book Ittiʿāẓ al-Ḥunafāʾ bi-Akhbār al-Aʾimma al-Fāṭimiyyīn al-Khulafāʾ, which is considered one of the most important sources that deal with the history of the Fatimid State in a detailed and systematic manner. Al-Maqrizi was keen to arrange events chronologically while paying attention to interpreting historical developments and linking them to their historical context.

The writings of al-Maqrizi had a significant impact on the historiography of the Fatimid State, as his works became among the most important references relied upon by later historians and contemporary scholars in studying this period. Through his analytical method and his transmission of historical accounts, he contributed to forming a clear understanding of the nature of Fatimid rule and its political and administrative systems, in addition to highlighting aspects of cultural and economic life during that period. Therefore, his writings are considered essential sources for understanding the history of the Fatimid State and its role in the history of Islamic civilization.
