Al-Mutraf bin Al-Mughira bin Shuba and his relationship with the Umayyads

Abstract

In this research, we discussed the life of one of the governors of the Umayyad state and his relationship with it and the governors, especially the historical relationship between Al-Mughira bin Shuba, his father, and Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan and the marriage, which was the main reason for the sons of Al-Mughira bin Shuba to take over, including Al-Mutraf, who took over the rule of the city of Al-Madain during the reign of Abdul Malik bin Marwan, who began his movement against the Umayyads due to the arbitrary actions of the governor of Iraq, Al-Hajjaj bin Yusuf Al-Thaqafi, against the rulers of the cities and their people, and this movement consolidated the foundations of political reform within the general Umayyad system.

Because of these conditions, Al-Mutraf carried out a political movement opposing the Umayyad political system, which he could not continue for long, and he paid the price for this movement with his life.

This research aims to answer an important question: Did Al-Mutarrif ibn Al-Mughira succeed in establishing the foundations of political reform in the Umayyad regime during his opposition movement? Al-Mughira ibn Shuba was one of the prominent figures in his loyalty to the Umayyads, especially since he was linked by marriage to Abu Sufyan, the leader and commander of the Quraysh in their wars against the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, especially after the death of his uncle Abu Talib until the conquest of Mecca in the year (8 AH / 628 AD). Then he converted to Islam and the appointment of Al-Mutarrif ibn Al-Mughira and his two brothers (Urwah and Hamza) came in line with this relationship during the reign of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (65 AH / 685 AD). Al-Mutarrif carried out a political movement in opposition to Umayyad policy, and this movement (revolution) affected the Umayyad political system and the path of Al-Mutarrif himself.
