The syntactic level of the poetic sentence in the poetry of Arta’ah ibn Suhayyah al-Murri

Abstract

Studying the syntactic level of a literary text is an essential means of investigating the distinctive characteristics of a particular work. The researcher at this level takes a series of issues and approaches, all of which stem from the text itself. Therefore, the syntactic level is important in understanding a poetic text and its language, since literature is, above all, a linguistic art. The syntactic level of linguistic formation deals with the internal relationships between the linguistic elements in a text, such as grammatical issues, rhetorical purposes, and poetic aesthetics. The poet Arta'ah ibn Suhayyah al-Murri is distinguished by his ability to embody linguistic beauty and poetic expression in his poetry. He is considered one of the poets of the Umayyad era and has made distinguished contributions to the literary scene. This study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach to uncover the structural level of the poetic sentence in the poetry of Arta'ah ibn Suhayyah al-Murri. The structural elements of the sentences in his poetry are analyzed, focusing on how they are used to add aesthetic appeal to poetic texts. By analyzing the structural elements of the sentences in his poems and understanding how they are used, the study reached several conclusions, including that the poet's intelligent use of linguistic formation enhances the power of poetic expression. It was also demonstrated that he skillfully and creatively uses grammatical structures to create distinctive expressive effects in his poetry. The study also revealed the interconnected relationship between linguistic structure and poetic content, as linguistic formation contributes to highlighting the overall aesthetics of the poetic text.
