Turke,s stand of Civil of Spanish War 1936-1939

Abstract

Turkish-Spanish relations between 1923 and 1936 were positive, and contacts between officials of the two countries culminated in the signing of a friendship treaty concluded by the two governments on September 28, 1924. Regarding Turkey's position on the Spanish Civil War of 1936 and 1937, the Turkish government adhered to a policy of non-interference in the Spanish Civil War and made legal arrangements regarding compliance with the control plan applied to Spain, which granted Turkey control at sea and on land. The assigned mission was the Strait of Gibraltar. The duties of Turkish diplomats in Spain during the Spanish Civil War included sending reports to the Turkish government and providing it with accurate information about the Spanish Civil War. The Turkish government's attitude towards both sides of the Spanish Civil War began to take a new turn in February 1938 when nationalist refugees took refuge in the Turkish embassy in Madrid and the Turkish ambassador was mistreated by the Republican government. The Turkish government reacted so strongly that it contacted the nationalist government and its diplomatic representative in March 1938. Despite diplomatic contacts with the nationalist government and problems with the Republican government, Türkiye continued to view the Republican government as the legitimate Spanish government until the end of the Civil War.
