Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of name explanation in al-Marzuqi's (d. 421 AH) book, *Kitab al-Azmina wa al-Amakin* (Book of Times and Places), as a semantic feature revealing the interplay between language and the cultural and ethnic perceptions of the Arabs.

It also aims to uncover Abu Ali al-Marzuqi's motivations in explaining names, analyze the types of explanations he employed, and assess their proximity to or distance from linguistic derivation in the strict sense.

From this perspective, the study employs a descriptive-analytical approach, utilizing a semantic framework, to trace and classify the causal models presented in his book into linguistic, descriptive, cultural, and anthropological patterns.

The study concludes that al-Marzouki's nominal reasoning is not limited to linguistic derivation alone; rather, it extends to the utilization of cultural and religious heritage. This reflects his encyclopedic vision, which integrates language, astronomy, and social thought.

Herein lies the importance of this study, as it contributes to a re-reading of the linguistic heritage through an analytical reading, and reveals the mechanisms of semantic thinking among the ancient linguists, and confirms that the reasoning behind the name represents an important entry point for understanding the relationship between the word and the meaning.
