Translating English proverbs into Arabic

Abstract

Translation of Proverbs is an important aspect of linguistic and cultural exchange between peoples, because a proverb is not just a short phrase, but an intensive idiomatic expression that carries with it historical experiences and social values inherited through generations. Proverbs are deeply rooted in the culture and language of society, often reflect his outlook on life, work, human relationships, success, failure. Therefore, its translation is a real challenge, as a literal translation may not accurately convey the intended meaning, and sometimes it may lead to misunderstanding or loss of the cultural dimension underlying the proverb. Hence, translators resort to multiple strategies to ensure that the meaning is conveyed correctly and clearly. One of the most prominent of these strategies is the use of an equivalent proverb in the target language that carries the same connotation, even if the linguistic wording differs. The explanation or paraphrase can also be adopted when there is no direct opposite, so that the idea is explained in a style understandable to the reader. There is also what is known as cultural compensation, where one cultural element is replaced by another that suits the culture of the target language, while preserving the basic message of the proverb. Choosing the appropriate strategy requires careful consideration of the cultural and linguistic contexts of both the source language and the target language, in addition to taking into account the nature of the target audience and its level of understanding. An example translated for academic purposes may have a different style of transmission than an example translated for literary or informational purposes. The translator's awareness of the nuances of semantics and connotations also contributes to a more accurate and effective translation. And by translating Proverbs, we can get to know more deeply the beliefs, values and customs of Peoples, which promotes mutual understanding and reduces cultural barriers. Proverbs are a mirror of society, and their translation opens a window into different ways of thinking. Therefore, the role of translators of Proverbs is not limited to the transfer of words, but extends to building bridges of civilized communication, contributing to the enrichment of human knowledge and promoting dialogue between different cultures.
