"The Role of "Al-Ahram" Newspaper in Representing Women in The Political Life During the Era of President Anwar Sadat(1970-1981)

Abstract

This research examines deeply the role of “Al-Ahram” newspaper in promoting and representing the  Egyptian women’s participation in the political life during the period of President Anwar Sadat’s rule, a historical stage that witnessed many major social and political changes in Egypt.

With increasing the interest in women's rights issues and the need to enhance their presence in the public sphere, "Al-Ahram" played a prominent media role in highlighting women's issues and their achievements, pointing out their political rights such as the right to vote and run  public office. Hence, the newspaper contributed to highlighting the progress achieved by women in terms of political participation as part of achieving their rights.

The research focuses on how Al-Ahram addresses the challenges that hinder women’s involvement in political life, which are often

related to social factors such as conservative customs and traditions, which may limit women’s aspiration for a greater role in the political field. In order to address these obstacles, the newspaper called on society to educate women about their political rights and emphasize the importance of empowering them, by organizing awareness seminars and media campaigns aimed at motivating women to engage in the public sphere.

In addition, the study  presents the role of social work as a starting point towards expanding women’s political participation, as this activity is considered an effective means of preparing women for effective political contribution, which helps them develop their leadership skills and enhances their confidence in the ability to influence society. "Al-Ahram" emphasizes the importance of social work as a preliminary stage for developing women’s political awareness and preparing them for effective participation in the political life.

In conclusion, the research shows that  media, especially Al-Ahram newspaper, played a fundamental role in supporting women’s issues and encouraging society to overcome social challenges that may hinder its progress.

It also concludes that the future of Egypt requires the continuation of these joint media and community efforts to enhance women's empowerment and activate their role on a broader scale in public and political life, which will contribute to enhancing stability and sustainable development of the country.
