This study aims to explore the linguistic and grammatical dimension of sustainable development in the Qur’an by analyzing the declarative verses, which highlight the universal laws of balance and construction, and the imperative verses, which direct humankind toward cultivation, reform, and the avoidance of corruption. The significance of the study lies in the fact that previous research has largely addressed sustainable development from economic, social, and environmental perspectives, while the grammatical and semantic aspects of the Qur’anic text have received little attention, despite their profound implications for humanity’s role as God’s vicegerent on earth.
The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by identifying relevant Qur’anic verses and examining their grammatical structures in terms of sentence type (nominal or verbal) and verb forms (past, present, imperative), and the temporal and pragmatic meanings they convey. The findings reveal that the declarative style in the Qur’an affirms universal laws and establishes the principle of continuity and stability in resources and the environment, while the imperative style guides human behavior toward constructive development and warns against corruption and waste.
The study concludes that the Qur’an employs grammatical structures with remarkable precision to establish a comprehensive concept of sustainable development, combining the stable cosmic order with the renewable human responsibility, thus preceding modern theories and providing them with a solid ethical and theological foundation. After analyzing the concept of sustainable development in light of the Holy Quran, a set of key conclusions can be drawn, confirming that Islam has laid strong and comprehensive foundations for sustainable development. These foundations address environmental, economic, and social aspects, and call for achieving a just balance between humanity and nature. Through its verses, both explanatory and imperative, we find that the Holy Quran calls for achieving balanced development that guarantees the rights of current and future generations. Based on the preceding conclusions, a set of recommendations can be offered for achieving sustainable development according to the Quranic methodology.
