Abstract

This research, entitled "The Phenomenon of Abbreviation in the Kurdish Language: Behdinan region as a Case Study," investigates the linguistic nuances of abbreviation within the Kurdish language, specifically as manifested in the publications of Behdinan region. The study endeavors to identify the lexical items and expressions susceptible to abbreviation, the diverse structural methods of their formation, and the specific linguistic strata at which these processes occur. Furthermore, it examines the broader patterns of abbreviation inherent in the Kurdish language, with a localized focus on the stylistic conventions of the Behdinan-based accent.

Adopting a descriptive-analytical methodology, the study demonstrates that abbreviation is a pervasive linguistic phenomenon common to most world languages, occurring in Kurdish through several distinct forms. The research is bifurcated into two primary chapters: the first chapter is dedicated to the intersection of abbreviation and terminology, exploring conceptual definitions, typologies, inherent characteristics, and the functional roles of terms, alongside the mechanisms of terminological derivation. The second chapter focuses on the mechanics of abbreviation within the Kurdish linguistic system, addressing its conceptual framework and its core structural categories, namely: clipping, blending, alphabetism, and acronymy. Additionally, the study explores the pragmatic dimensions of abbreviation. The research concludes with a synthesis of the primary findings and a bibliography of references.
