Abstract

This study discusses the importance of revisiting the concept of care of the self as one of the key frameworks for understanding the transformation that occurred in the thought of Michel Foucault, marked by the shift from analyzing power to analyzing the self. This shift is explored through a reexamination of Greek philosophy, particularly the philosophy of Socrates and the principle of “Know thyself,” which implies a form of attention to and care for the self. According to Foucault, this principle was largely neglected and overlooked in modern thought. His work therefore seeks to shed light on it and to regard it as a foundational starting point for the concept of care of the self and the cultivation of self-attentiveness
