Mechanisms for preventing drug abuse among students in secondary schools from the point of view of teachers: A social field study in the Hindiyah District Center

Abstract

The current research aims to identify the phenomenon of drugs among students in secondary schools in the Hindiyah district center. To achieve the goal of the research, the researcher constructed a questionnaire consisting of (30) questions, which was distributed to a purposive sample of male and female teachers in two schools (Al-Khairat Secondary School for Boys, and Al-Naba Al-Azim Secondary School for Girls) in the Hindiyah District Center, numbering (100) male and female teachers, and the curriculum was relied upon. The descriptive social survey in defining and treating the research variables, as well as using several statistical methods such as percentage, arithmetic mean, relative importance, Pearson’s law for the validity and reliability of the questionnaire, and the Chi-square test, and the most important results reached by this research are:

  • The majority of participants (92.6%) emphasized the role of school administration in achieving drug prevention.
  • It was found that the majority of respondents (87.6%) believe that the teacher has an effective role in achieving drug abuse prevention.
  • The results showed that most participants (84.4%) believe that the educational counselor has a key role in achieving drug prevention, which reflects the recognition of the importance of his role in supporting and guiding students to avoid this harmful phenomenon.
  • The results showed that the vast majority of participants believe that school curricula play a vital role in achieving and increasing awareness of the problem of drug abuse among students, as the percentage of consensus on this point reached (84.4%).
  • The research results revealed that the majority of respondents believe that school activities play a vital role in achieving prevention of drug abuse, as the percentage of consensus on this point reached (81.8%).
  • A percentage (87%) of respondents believe that parents have an especially key role in preventing drug abuse among students.

This research concluded with a set of recommendations and proposals, the most prominent of which were:

  • Strengthening cooperation between school, family, and society in drug prevention.
  • The necessity of relying on school activities dedicated to prevention and awareness of the dangers of drugs.
  • Providing more training for teachers and counselors on dealing with drug issues.
  • Increase awareness of the dangers of drugs among students and parents.
  • Conduct similar research on the role of sports activities in achieving prevention of the drug problem in schools and universities.
