Abstract

The thirties of the twentieth century was characterized by important political, economic and social events that took place in the contemporary history of Iraq. These events contributed to the development of the Iraqi journalistic performance. Iraqi newspapers dealt with these events through their published articles, most of which expressed the bad political and economic reality the country passed through as a result of Iraq’s submission to British colonialism. This resulted in a conflict between Iraqi newspapers which criticized the miserable reality and successive Iraqi governments. This prompted successive Iraqi governments to issue a package of laws and ministerial decisions to restrict the influence of Iraqi newspapers on public opinion and make the ideas presented there more appropriate to their political orientations, most of which fall under the influence of the British colonialist. This reduced the performance of Iraqi newspapers. Freedom of opinion and work in the journalistic field was restricted, which negatively affected the transmission of the true picture of the difficult reality that the Iraqis were experiencing, especially during the period of the subject of the study, as well as giving a wider scope for the British colonizer to implement his colonial goal as long as popular censorship was weak due to the weakness of the means of conveying real news to public opinion. The Iraqi matter was adopted by the Iraqi newspapers.
